VII Tartu Early Music Festival 25-28 Sept. 2002The Mystery of Monodic Music.Looking at the history of European music culture during the last millennium, we see monodic music giving rise to many different varieties of polyphonic music which, through countless styles and forms, has shaped Occidental music into what it is today. Still, monodic music persists to date also in the European cultures, let alone a number of Oriental high cultures. Has musical thought changed since the rise of polyphony? Is monodic music primitive in nature? How has monodic music together with its manifestations been understood in earlier European cultures and in other ancient civilizations? These, as well as many other questions will be taken up at the present Early Music Festival featuring elite performers of Indian classical music next to musicians from the European traditions, the monodic and polyphonic liturgic chant of both the Eastern and Western Churches, old Scandinavian ballads and improvisations as well as fascinating combinations of Ancient Greek sound, Arabic and? contemporary music! Welcome to the Festival!
